Hiko Iwi Electric Initiative
Hiko is the newly introduced Iwi Electric initiative that aligns to the shared commitment of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to te taiao. Promoting not only a greener mode of transport but the benefits on sustainability and economic advances for whānau. In 2024, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei introduced three electric Hiko vehicles as part of a shared transport initiative at Ōrākei Marae. This programme, aims to enhance access to EVs for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei whānau. Available for up to twelve-hour periods to support community transport needs.
Implementing a vehicle share programme, is set to greatly reduce whānau CO2 emissions, vehicle and fuel costs, while promoting community engagement with EV technology and education. Enforcing our mātāpono (values) of whanaungatanga and kaitiakitanga.

Hiko Charging Hub - Ōrākei Marae
Ōrākei Marae has it’s very own Hiko Hub charging station for electric vehicles. These chargers are situated in the Marae carpark beside Tumanako House. This charging station is now available for whānau to charge personal EV or plug-in PHEV vehicles.
To use this service, you will need a personal Hiko Card to unlock and to activate the charging station. This ensures that the chargers can only be accessed by our Hiko waka and our whānau EVs.
Apply for a Hiko Card here, or simply email us at hiko@nwo.iwi.nz . Once submitted, the team will be in touch to collect your Hiko Card. Other terms of use apply, please adhere to these rules.
*Note that in busy periods, NWŌ Hiko vehicles will have priority access to these chargers to ensure their availability for shared use. Thank you for joining us in this important taiao kaupapa. By choosing to drive an EV, you are making a significant impact on te taiao!
